There is no end to the different kinds of cakes that you can find throughout the United States. From bunt cakes, to sheet cake,s and to multi-layered cakes, there is something to suit just about every taste.
Just about every gathering will include at least one chocolate cake among the desserts. One of the most popular cakes in the country, the cake itself may be a simple yellow cake that is topped with chocolate icing, or a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. At times, the cake may be enhance with chocolate liqueur to intensify the appeal to the taste buds.
When it comes to the frosting, some recipes call for adding a little extra. One good example is the use of peanut butter. In the American South, it is not unusual to combine chocolate frosting with an equal amount of creamy peanut butter. Whipping the two together makes it possible to apply a thicker layer of frosting, and also adds a little something extra that draw people back for another slice.
Nothing beats a good slice of cheesecake. Made using a combination of cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and vanilla flavoring, the cheesecake can be served without any toppings. The most common is known by as the New York cheesecake.
Elsewhere around the country, additional ingredients and a variety of toppings are used to cre-ate interesting combinations. Cocoa added to the basic recipe will produce a chocolate cheesecake. Fruit toppings like cherries or strawberries also help to dress up the basic recipe. Cheesecake can be made with a basic Graham cracker crust or with no crust at all.
Angel Food Cake
For those who like something lighter, angel food cake is a great option. Most recipes will call for the use of cake flour, powdered sugar along with granulated sugar, and egg whites. Cream of tartar and a combination of vanilla with almond or lemon flavor add to the basic ingredients. The result is a cake that is very light and fluffy. You can serve it with fresh fruit and some whipped topping, or prepare a drizzle frosting that adds a little extra flavor to the dessert.
